Fraudulant balance transfer to Capital One

I have an Aqua credit card which I mainly use as a backup in case of emergencies, (i.e, replacing a broken appliance).

The card was used on 12th December to purchase a new powerchair as the one I was using was very old and on its last legs. I had gone to a mobility showroom in Essex (I will not name on here) as I had seen a powerchair on their website and needed to see it in the flesh. After seeing this chair and giving it a test drive, I decided to purchase this chair which was discounted by 65%. After trying to make the purchase, the payment was initially blocked by Aqua in case this was a fraudulant transaction. After speaking to Aqua, the payment of just over £1,100 was allowed to go through.

It was only by checking my Aqua online account a couple of days later, that I saw a payment to Capital One of £300 and balance transfer fee had been transacted, which I knew nothing about. I spoke to Aqua fraud team who immediately blocked my card and have started to investigate. My replacement card arrived on Christmas Eve.

I also reported this fraud to the police Action Fraud team who are also investigating.

After speaking to Aqua today, I have been told that they are waiting for Capital One to get back in contact with them, and this could take up to 90 days to sort out. They also confirmed that the Capital One payment was put through after the powerchair payment. To me, this seems like somebody at the mobility company has used my card details to commit this fraud.

how would they know your aqua site login, they wouldn't from your card
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

My Aqua login is not the problem here. The person would have only needed the card number, expiry date and 3 digit security code to do the fraudulant payment online. Those details were taken by the mobility company when I paid for the goods in the showroom. That is the only way I can think the card details were used.

Whoever did the balance transfer would need access to your Aqua account.

The money is pushed from Aqua to Capital One.

    Hi sabre99

The fraudster must be exceptionally stupid to steal from your credit card using a balance transfer. They could be traced immediately as the Cap One account holder.

Is there any possibility that a family member or friend did this (who knows your passwords, or saw you had left your computer logged in to your account)?
  • Could just be a mistake.

As an aside, I doubt whether "Action Fraud" will do anything even if they say they will. They regard situations such as this as a fraud on the bank (cos it's not your money) and will let them deal with it and report if necessary. Not saying you were wrong to report it though.

There is only myself and my wife who live at home, and neither of us have ever held a Capital One account. She was with me at the time this happened. She doesn't even know my log in details or pin number for both my bank and credit card accounts. I only log in to check the balance on the account, and to pay off the balance each month.I always make sure to log out when I have finished on there. Unless the dog can use a computer, then that is impossible.

When I spoke to Aqua earlier, they confirmed that the payment was made by just using the card number, expiry date and security code only. This fraudulant payment was made approx 30 mins after paying for the powerchair. We would have been travelling on the M25 on the way home then.
  • I had hoped I'd find something like this on here I would like to warn others if you pay online for goods at the moment and use the Barclays Visa Verification system the card info processing part of the payment process collapses and an onscreen message advises you that the payment has been unsuccessful and you should use another card or try again later, in reality if you bank online you will see that you bank has released the payment whether the verification process has completed or not if you then get an onscreen message that the world pay server has technical problems .Please try again later you cannot get back to the business you were ordering from to complete your purchase and order so now we have situation where banks are realeasing funds to businesses but the customer is not aware of the release of the funds because they have been told the transaction was not made and they should try again. I had five failed payments on Christmas day according to the card verification process I visited the bank last week and they refused to refund me my £50 all unauthorised payments as I was not aware the payments were being paid, this is fraud and it looks very much like the banks are going to be in a lot of trouble again in 2015 once people wake up to what is happening all those online sales to. it could be a right mess to sort out.

    Hi sabre99

    There is some confusion here...

Yes - an online payment often only needs a card number, expiry date and 3 digit CVV.

But a balance transfer must be done by phone to Aqua or via your online Aqua account.

And you mentioned a balance transfer fee, so it must be a balance transfer.

(And just to rule out another possibility... Cap One allow people to pay their CC bill online - but only with debit cards, not credit cards.)

I think the person you spoke to at Aqua is confused.

If you still disagree, how exactly do you think the payment could have been made (e.g. which website did the fraudster go to)?
