sky security concern

Options
i tried signing in to my sky account and could not do so as it was asking me security question which i knew i had not selected as it was asking about football team, (i have no interest in football whatsoever )but still i thought i might have made a mistake, however , i was rather surprised and worried when i received an email with someone elses name on it.
at this point i realised that there was some mix-up.

i am very concerned about security issues now as i have received an email with someone elses name and links to access the account, someone else could also have received mine.

has anyone else ever had this problem and is there any cause for concern.
i have since reset my sky account, but i am still worried as to why this happened in the first place.
this could have gone on for a long time and even now i dont know since when this has been happening as i was accessing my sky after a long time
Nice to save.

  • My mother called sky to upgrade her account to get movies. 24 hours later i had sky movies (not requested by myself) and my mother did not although she as being charged for it.

We have live at different addresses, different names etc. I thought it was just a coincidence at first until Sky called my house a few times to speak to my mother.

Sky seem to be very lax at times.

  • Most likely explanation is not that anyone else has had access to your details, just that someone has mistyped their own email address when setting up their online account; this wouldn't have enabled them to see your details, but as you've found out it has effectively allowed you to see theirs if ownership of the email address is the only security verification Sky require. Presumably either now or at some point in the past Sky have allowed account set-up without the use of the "an email has been sent to you inbox please click the link to verify you have definitely given us your own email address" thingy. I've had the same issue with VirginMobile in the past.

If you haven't already done so obviously you'll want to phone Sky and check out the details from their end, just in case. Even assuming it happened as outline above, data protection wise it seems a bit lax if they don't send out an authentication email or do any kind of identity confirmation.
