But us company car drivers have no choice usually - it's diesel or diesel, as mandated by company policy.0

If diesel fuel price was the same as petrol, and it costs the same to buy a diesel car, I would buy a diesel every time. Unfortunately, diesels are cranking up air pollution, and the EU is clamping down on it. Boris Johnson would probably bump up the diesel congestion charge today if he could, but London residents who just bought diesels cars will riot.
I wouldn't be surprised if they increase the duty on diesel to try to discourage diesel cars, as an anti-pollution measure.
Emissions gear on cars is supposed to have improved, but taxis buses and cars were exempt from the stricter requirements for quite some time.
If Boris turfed the taxis off the roads, that might or might not improve the air, but also increase the chances of disruption.0 -
The current CO2 based road tax bands deals with the greenhouse gas aspect, and does not really address air pollution, which is more to do with NO2 and particulate, which diesel produces more of. As the EU pressure builds up on the need to tackle NO2 and particulate, diesel cars will be the first to be targeted. If they change the bands to reflect NO2 and particulate emissions as well, plus higher congestion charge, the end is nigh.
As I said earlier, I like diesels, but I don't want to be trying to sell a diesel when everyone else is dumping them.
On the other hand, that will be the ideal time to pick up a diesel bargain. So, get a 2 litre turbo diesel in 2018? Mitsubishi ASX 4, or a Skoda Yeti, £8k off list. Sweet dreams.0 -
Surely you should compare a diesel Phaeton against a petrol Phaeton?
Why, you weren't specific in your post, so I didn't see the need to be in mine. You said "If you are driving 30,000 miles a year, you are saving money with a diesel, any way" so I was just demonstrating a way that sweeping generalisation would not be true.0
