I want to buy my first property in London. budget is around 300k. Will I be able to buy any small decent flat in a decent area? I am planning to pay 120k and take a mortgage for the remaining 180k.

Have a look on Rightmove? Only you know what you mean by "a decent area". On the face of it, though, £300k is a reasonably decent budget for a small flat (presume you mean one or two bedrooms?) even in London so you will certainly have some options.0

Most definitely! Where do you commute to most?0

I like the map search facility on zoopla, which reveals that there are (for example) 700 places for sale in the range £275k-£325k in my preferred area; South East London, much of which has good (zone 3) commuter links to the City and Docklands, often decent shops, bars and restaurants and in some areas, very pleasant open space.

Offers range from quite big places in Lewisham and Catford, or, if you don't mind the outer areas, 3-bedders in Plumsted and Abbey Wood to studios in more 'desirable' Blackheath and Greenwich.
So as someone says; think about the commute, look at the map and get on yer bike; when I moved to SE 7 and SE3 I spent days cycling round the area at all times of the day and night looking at the outside of places on the market, to get a feel for where I could see myself living.0 -
Lots of choice. As above, where you do need to commute to/visit regularly?
North Chingford, E4 (2 bed): http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-33233979.html
