Car stolen - need advice

Hi,

My car has been stolen. I think someone was following me and picked the keys somehow from my pocket - I was wearing a loose jacket. Vehicle was appraised by webuyanycar and I was offered £1800 few weeks back.

I have reported the car stolen to police and insurance company about a week ago.

Told the insurance company I did not want to claim for fear of my premium going up. Should I go ahead and claim? Will the premium go up regardless of whether I claim or not, since I have notified them of the theft and it will be in their records.

There has been no update from police or trace - so I have lost hope of getting the car back.

I am ready to move on and purchase another vehicle. I also don't want to be responsible for maintaining insurance and road tax for the stolen vehicle.

I also don't want to be responsible for any incident the car may be involved in. Will I continue to be responsible for this vehicle?

Is there a way to give up ownership through DVLA?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Why on earth do you not want to claim for a stolen car when you have been paying for the last year to ensure it against being stolen.....

Its likely you will be paying more premium for your next car, you have informed them about the last one and there fore you are now more of a risk.

If you have informed insurance and police then you are no longer responsible for it.

Calm down. You have reported it, so are not liable for it anymore.
Claim off your insurance as it will increase anyway (unless you paid extra to protect your NCD).
WBAC valued it at £1800, so you should get £2500 back from your insurers (WBAC are notorious for undervaluing cars).

Even with protected NCD their premium will probably rise due to them being classed as a higher risk.
When your NCD is protected, all you are doing is ensuring that the discount stays the same. Irrespective of this, your base premium can still go up after a claim.

I suggest you have a lie down and stop dreaming about the time when you are eventually old enough to have a car.

Unfortunately, the insurance probably won't pay out anyway* if you do not have the keys, or stab marks/bruises from when you fought off the attacker who took your keys.

"Must have been taken from my pocket by someone following me" could be construed as "did not take proper care of the keys/dropped the keys/left them in the car".

They won't pay out if the keys are taken from your house unless there are definite signs of a break-in as confirmed by a police report.

*especially in the cold weather when people leave the car running outside the house to defrost, and then wonder where it is when they go back outside 10 minutes later...

Who follows someone to pick pocket a set of keys to steel a car worth £1800? Why would any experienced criminal risk getting caught for a heap of junk. A brand new Range Rover I can believe but this? The schools are still off aren't they!

It's very unusual for a policy to contain a requirement that there be evidence of a forced entry to your house to steal your keys for a car theft to be covered.

It's not a restriction I've ever seen but possibly does exist with an obscure Insurer.

However if the owner did not have the keys it would certainly spur the Insurers to perform extra checks on the claim to ensure it's valid.

Leaving the keys on or in the car is obviously a common restriction

So I leave the keys on the table in the hall, or my coat pocket, don't bother locking the front door, and someone comes in and has it away with the car whilst I am watching Emmerdale I will get a 21st century insurance company to pay out for the car

Some how I doubt it ;)
