Videos to DVD

I have loads of video camera tapes and would like to transfer them onto DVD but I don't know if it is possible unless I send them to a camera shop. I wonder if anyone can tell me how to do it. Thanks.

I have loads of VHS tapes that I've been trying to transfer too.

I ended up buying a cheap DVD recorder & recording onto DVD+RW discs via scart (there are phono/rca connections for camcorder etc on the front of the recorder) I then transfer them to the PC.

Now I'm trying to figure out how the edit the files. You end up with IFO, BUP & VOB files. VOB can be changed to mpg/wmv etc. I burn these to DVD-R with some free software from Ashampoo. Hope this helps a bit?

With a lot of tapes the easiest and probably most cost-effective way is to get a DVD recorder, connect the camera to it and record your tapes onto DVD.
Do I want it? ......Do I need it? ......What would happen if I don't buy it??????

I have recently been covering this with my brother, Ideally for best results you need a digital VCR and a PC with fire-wire connections on each, we found that the most user friendly video, transfer/ editing package was the Pinnacle studio 10.5,REVIEW HERE we found this on eBay for under £10, and within a few weeks my brother was up and running and editing videos and converting his old video collection onto dvds, I hope that this helps in your decision, there's definitely no need to get a camera shop to do these things you can D.I.Y. on your home PC, Alan.

Thanks for your help. I have a good Sony DVD recorder and I am sure it came with loads of leads, so I will have a look in the bag of wires and see if the ones I need are there and give it a go. Thanks again.

With your DVD recorder your problem is solved. Your camera should also have some leads to connect to TV (DVD recorder in this case). You can also get any leads from ebay or shops like maplin.

Firstly digitise all your original videos onto DVD to prevent future degradation and then you can start looking into software options to selectively copy and edit them on your PC.

Thanks for advice. When I find all the cables I need I think you might have to talk me through this as I don't want to erase the tapes my mistake (or maybe this might not be possible) anyway, thanks and I will be back.

VOB files can be re-named .mpeg or .mpg for editing purposes.
Alternatively, you'll need a DVD Ripper to grab the contents of your newly created DVD and to place them in the wrapper of your choice.
