Advice on DVR for new TV

Hi, I have currently an old CRT TV with a Humax 9200t (160Gb) for recording programmes. I have just ordered a Sony KDL48W585BBU 48 Inch Full HD Smart LED TV.

Am I right in thinking I can't continue to use the 9200t as a programme recorder now I,ve got an HD TV?

And if so, which product should I be looking at ? (whether Humax or not)
I should add that it will be for Freeview not satellite or cable

Thanks

The pvr receives and records tv independently of the tv, so it will still work, provided the tv and pvr have the appropriate connections ie scart/hdmi/aerial/composite, your tv has scart, so it will just plug in as before

However, to get the full benefit of the new tv, a newer HD pvr with a hdmi connection would be useful, there are many to choose from, so it depends on budget and features required. Many ISP's bundle them as part of tv packages too.

Your pvr will continue record in standard definition as it does now. The picture quality should be very good.

Thanks for the replies. Will all the programmes be in standard def. then as the aerial feed is put through the humax then via scart to the tv.
Or do I have to bypass the humax except when recording ( what I mean is that at the moment I can pause or rewind programmes without formally 'recording' them - will that mean even HD broadcasts will be shown in SD?)

The Humax passes through the signal from your aerial , therefore if the TV is HD and the channel is HD then away you go

anything that is recorded or time delayed by using the pvr hard disk as a buffer is going to be SD, not that there is a great deal of difference visually, and not all channels are in HD anyway.

There is quite a noticeable difference between HD and SD.

The HD channels are extra channels that your SD pvr cannot see but your HD tv can. No need to bypass the aerial. Your pvr will not record HD channels but can record the SD equivalent.

http://www.freeview.co.uk/what-we-offer/freeview-hd Note the channel numbers. Your pvr will not see these.

This is easier than you think. I use a Humax 9300 which is SD with a HD Samsung tv. It works fine. I just cannot record or watch the HD channels through the pvr. Buy the tv, connect the pvr and live with it for a while, then decide if you need a HD pvr.

    No, there isn't.

    This is a joke, yeah?
There is a massive difference in picture quality between HD and SD, even the 1080i signal from Sky is damn impressive.

From a quick check of the specs it appears that TV model should record onto a USB hard drive from the Freeview HD tuner, so you could connect a spare external drive and use that to record/pause hi-def broadcasts.
