What to do if made overpayment to credit card and is in credit by large amount?

Options
I have a credit card from aqua credit card provider with £2500 credit which I only use to make big purchases and pay it in next statement. This time I made 2 purchases totalling over £1800 before Christmas which I needed to claim from my employer. I was not sure if I had direct debit setup or not for this CC and my employer processed the claim early due to Christmas holidays. I also didn't bother checking if I had direct debit setup or not and made online payment this CC on 25th december. due to bank holidays the payment was on pending transaction but on 29th (Monday) by direct debit got taken from bank account for full amount on this credit card and by the time I realised that in the evening the pending transaction of £1800 got processed as well. so now here I am with nearly no money in my account having overpaid the CC by £1800 making the credit in total of £4300.

I have been calling the credit card provider and the bank (Halifax) since morning one after another and both of them are reluctant on saying that they can not process the payment but the opposite party can. CC provider says I should make indemnity claim from bank but bank says they need a reason for indemnity claim and duplicate payment is not one of them. They also says that as both of the transactions are done by my authority they can not refund it but the CC provider should revert the transaction.

I am not sure what I should be doing at this moment; I also am not going to make any such purchases/payments which would cover up the overpayment amount. Can someone please advise me what I can do?:mad:

Your bank is right, and the CC card provider is wrong. They can process the payment or send you a cheque. Stick to your guns, complain and escalate the complaint if necessary.

Next time be more careful with manual payments and don't make them very close to the DD date.

Don't worry your not the only person to do this :) I have done it too.

For me at-least, i received a letter in the post and a cheque. I know that it is a bit of a nightmare over the Christmas period and your bank wont really help you because you instructed them to make a payment, which they did and it's not there problem to fix. And your credit card will take a little while for the payments to show up, its usually a few workings days but with Christmas its a but slow.

Are you able to log into your credit card account online? does it show both payments?
Great things are done by a series of small things brought together.
If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way.

I paid off over £1000 on my credit card once when the balance was just over £100, stick to your guns and it will get sorted, when it happened to me both my bank account and credit card were with halifax, it still took over a month to sort out.

Yes I have online access to credit card and to my bank account; before 29th Dec (Monday) the direct debit wasn't there on either of them (may be because it was long weekend of christmas) but the payment I made manually on 25th was as pending transaction in my bank account. then I checked it again on 29th evening and both the direct debit and debit card payment were shown as processed (not pending) on my credit card and bank account online.

Thanks for the reply but this is bit frightening that it may take this long even if both the bank account and credit card are provided by same company. My credit card provider is Aqua cards and they are not very helpful to be honest (and thats why I don't use it as my main CC) I wonder why would it take this long? When it's time for them to take money they mostly won't consider late payments(even by mistake!!).

I wonder if calling in the CC provider and telling them to close my credit card and request them to send me the cheque for overpaid amount would make them return the money faster??? I actually need these funds cleared by second week of January to pay it someone else.

I would just tell my wife to use the Aqua card for shopping. The problem would be sorted very quickly.

There's no need to close your card. Call them and request a cheque - I doubt they'll do it another way. Mention that credit balances are discouraged in the T+Cs.

Although a cheque won't arrive and be cleared in time for the second week of January. I suggest that you start spending on it - it doesn't have to be big purchases, just normal shopping.

I understand what you are saying but it just will take me ages to spend all those money up. £1700 is my monthly salary and my monthly regular CC shopping averages at around £350-£400. I already had to borrow money form friends to pay up my rent and cover other costs which I was hoping to return to them soon when these funds gets cleared.:mad:
