Painting wood steps (MDF?)

Hi helpful people,
I have taken the staircase carpet out and want to leave the staircase bare.
Slight problem is that the steps are not real wood. Its probably MDF, or something similar. Effectively compressed wood. Looks fine, obviously has no grain which makes it look less smart.
I filled and sanded the steps and now i am ready to paint, but i am not sure how to go about it, given a traditional stain will probably not work.
Do I prime first? And then try an all purpose paint? Any tips on the type of paint? I was looking at Ronseal floor paint.
Any ideas welcome!

Think about the noise and the wear on the edges, you will be painting the treads every 3 months....make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
I am hoping that with a paint and varnish, it will be more hard wearing than that. And its just me and me wife, not that much traffic.
I am thinking worst case scenario, I just put in some new carpet and have wasted some hours of my life. Carpet was in need of replacement anyway, this is what prompted it0
