Ipad volume help, please

Help for a friend please. She has limited use of the internet (only through work and at lunchtimes), hence me posting on her behalf.
Her daughter uses and Ipad for communication. She is non-verbal and has other special needs. She also plays educational games such as counting and shape sorting on it.
Mum isn't sure what has happened, but some apps now have no sound. The overall sound is working fine, but some apps are now silent. My teenage son has had a look at it, as some apps have a separate volume, but this doesn't seem to be the issue. It says that the volume is working, but no sound comes out. The volume symbol doesn't have the line through it (as in muted). Some apps still have sound, including Proloquo2Go (the communication app).
Any help appreciated. Thank you.
