Ive been wanting to try linux again using a usb stick. Ive downloaded linux mint onto an 8gb usb stick it works fine on my sons old compaq laptop but refuses to work on my newish fujitsu AH512 windows 8.1 laptop.
I press f12 to get into bootable mode?? the usb shows up ok press enter and I get 3 choices on the screen
1. linux mint 17.1 64 bit
2. start linux mint 17.1 cinnamon 64 bit (compatibility mode)
3. check the integrity of the medium
Ive entered each one and all I get is a blank screen and the cooling fan is on all the time.
can anyone help please?

This may be of some use http://community.linuxmint.com/tutorial/view/15560

yes, for me it was UEFI but had to change 2 settings in the bios of my non fujitsu laptop for unix. one for ub mode and one for UEFI
Also found iso to usb converter type programs are not always equal. now i use 'iso2usb' for windows and 'usb universal installer' for linux iso. It works more reliably for me, but I'm sure others will have their different own ways.

I tried virtualbox but I got the same result a blank screen.
UEFI and ub mode are words new to me! so I will try and use 'iso2usb' software and see what happens.
I will also read through the tutorial, thanks for the info0 -
