Can anyone shut me up please?

Hi all,

Im having an issue with my laptop. Im trying to watch a film on a disc using a HDMI cable through the tv.

All is ok but Ive got 2 lots of sound, the film and this really annoying music that runs as a background on my laptop whenever I have the sound level up.

If I try to watch anything on youtube its the same, there is always this background music playing.

Ive gone into settings but cant find any way to stop it. Ive also gone into the Dolby settings but if I turn the background music down in there the sound also goes down on the film.

Im on Windows 8 on a HP laptop.

Can anyone help please?

That does not sound normal, either an application or malware is running in the background. What is the music?

Do you do a full shut down and start up?

No idea what the music is, its been on the laptop since day one. its the most annoying piano type thing. Its always done it. I thought just going into the settings I would find a way to turn it off but its proving impossible.

Shutting down dosent help as its always there whenever I switch on. Normally I don't bother as if Im just browsing the web etc I don't need sound on, its just when I want to watch anything on you tube or a film.

In most cases, if you open your volume control (little speaker icon in the notification area) and click Mixer it should show you what is making a noise.

    Keep an eye on:

If that's not you of course.

Could it be caused by a screensaver on the laptop?

Could be some stupid HP screensaver, one of the reasons I don't build my own PCs, I don't have time for all the bloatware junk.

It must be something running in the background, some sort of demo or intro.

Close all windows and programs. Turn the volume up and do you hear the noise now?

I would suggest closing all processes one by one in task manager until the noise stops and then you'll know what it is.

from a quick google it appears to be maleware, running maleware bytes seems to cure the problem.

Oh -- and although I'm not familiar with Windows 8, previous versions allow you to set "system sounds" via the control panel. You can set an audio file to play when certain events occur (e.g. Windows starts, you close a program, an error occurs, etc.).

You might want to check that someone (or some "maleware") hasn't set some incredibly long audio file to play when Windows starts...
