soundproofing a wall

Options
We would like to soundproof a wall to reduce noise from next door. It has been suggested we use plasterboard over the brick wall with polystyrene in between. Is polystyrene safe in this application?

Firstly - what kind of noise is it, airborne (talking, music etc) or impact (stairs, doors, knocking).

If its impact there is little you can do.

Airborne can be countered, we employed a firm who built an independent stud wall. It had a air gap (about an 1/2 inch) sound deadening foam the acoustic plasterboard topped off with fresh plaster. We lost about 6 inches of room space.

I doubt polysterene will have any impact, you need more mass to absorb the sound. There are loads of suppliers of specialist materials on the web.

I can confirm since having ours installed we no longer hear our neighbours activities in the bedroom, tv, games, music, singing or talking!

Hi there, can you give me some idea as to how much this cost and for how much coverage?
    Thanks :)

  • For our lounge and bedroom wall it was £1500 - not cheap. You can buy the stuff and do it yourself but even the materials are not cheap! The plasterboard was so heavy and dense compared to standard plasterboard it was cut in squares to make it manageable!

You pays yours money and you takes your choice :) We felt it was worthwhile spending the money to maximise the impact the soundproofing we had.
