Are condensing tumble dryers any good these days?

  • My Indesit IDV75 vented has an efficiency rating of B at Currys and an efficiency rating of C (from where I bought mine) at Homebase. Interesting!
I have osteoarthritis in my hands so I speak my messages into a microphone using Dragon. Some people make "typos" but I often make "speakos".
  • Again a Currys, a silver IDV75 has a C rating while a white IDV75 has a B rating. The ratings do not appear very reliable or consistent.

I can see very little efficiency benefit in choosing between vented and condenser.

Figure I see imagine a typical user uses a tumble dryer for 4 loads per week. I think that we must be nearer to 16 loads.

16 loads would cost £332 a year for this model. Even at that it would take five years to make a recovery on a heat pump machine costing £400 upwards.

We've had a Candy condensor dryer for over 5 years now and it has been very good. I think it cost £199 at the time. I would not get a vented one unless it was outside in a shed or garage.

I've just got a new condenser tumble drier as the last one was enough to drive someone to despair it was so unbelievably loud. It was like a plane taking off.
Anyway so I've got this new one and it does get the clothes dry but its a pain in the bottom because of all the faffing about. Emptying the tray everytime as well as washing this other square bit and taking fluff off another part in the drum.

You empty the tray every time?
I have an easy to access fluff filter in the door, no trouble to empty it every few weeks.

I got a Samsung with a Heat Pump. The waste water is connected to the drain under the sink but it can also collect is a box you can empty if you're not near a drain.

It wasn't cheap but it's one of the best things I've bought in the last 10 years. It's quick to dry clothes, doesn't steam up my kitchen like the old machine did and it's a LOT cheaper to run than the last machine too!

This is the one I went for: http://www.samsung.com/uk/consumer/home-appliances/laundry/tumble-dryer/DV70F5E0HGW/EU

I'm sure other brands are just as good but whatever you buy make sure it has the Heat Pump as that seems to be the bit that saves you a fortune in the long run!
