Experience of switching to the smaller energy providers?
My fixed period with M & S energy is coming to an end. I have used Energy Club to do a comparison. The cheaper suggestions include First Utility and NPower which I choose to ignore due to personal experience and negative reviews. The other saver options are the smaller providers which I have never tried before so hesitate to choose. Has anyone taken that risk and found it to be worth it or is it better to be more cautious?

Of the smaller suppliers, you might want to look at Ovo Energy or Co-op Energy.
No supplier is perfect but these two are usually quite competitive and have reasonably good feedback from MSE polls.
Most suppliers have a feedback thread on MSE so you could get a bit more detail from these.

I went with First Utility.
My low usage & their Standing Charge gave me a good saving.
Happy with their service.

I am with 2 small suppliers, Zog for gas and ExtraEnergy for electric.
The transfer to Zog was flawless, constant e-mails during the process. I submit readings at the end of each month and get an e-mailed bill on the 9th. They do not have a fully functioning web presence but are old fashioned and efficient.
ExtraEnergy sent an e-mail when I signed up, one on the day I went live and another for the DD. I submit a reading once a month but have not received a bill in the 8 months I have been with them, neither have they sent a meter reader. Their supposed "fully functioning on line presence" is only partially working.0 -
Happy with Ovo .
But at the end of the contract all suppliers are up for consideration big or small .0 -

I am with Zog for gas only as well . I concur that although it is not a fully online account it works flawlessly . They are setting a standard that others only dream of achieving . Small is beautiful !0
