Mung beans can be sprouted to add to a salad, however they do take about 4 days, and lots of faffing with changing the water several times a day. They have a nice nutty taste.What would you get if all you got was what you were thankful for?0

satchmo - I know, I've thought about bean sprouts, but the truth is (apart from the faff), is I have a very, very small house, and I really can't think of anywhere that the beans could be put whilst they are sprouting. Irrespective of whether they are in a jar or if I got one of those stacking tower sprouting jobbies. I won't say that I will never have a go at sprouting (after all, the health benefits are said to be tremendous) but I don't think it can be done (easily) at Greying Towers as things currently stand
Well, I've been having fun fiddling in the kitchen. I was listening to Mr O'grady's show, and he ended with The Pretenders, 'Don't Get Me Wrong'. That tune always reminds me of 'Peter's Friends' - ha! Where are all the cast of that film now?...... :rotfl:

Dinner this evening was cheap and cheerful and a departure from what was on the menu-planner. I did buy a tin of potatoes (stop groaning at the back- they are ok for salad
), but everything else was from stores. We had Potato, green bean and chickpea salad, which, if you recall, I made the other week after seeing a pic of summat similar on Laura's instagram a/c, grated beetroot (no dressing, just the beet
) chopped tomatoes (using the last of the mix I got last week), Ms Monroe's Smoky lentil burgers and to top it off, a dollop (masquerading as a drizzle
) of Fortune's woodland asparagus pesto and no, before you all write in to complain, it was not that particular shade of grey in RL! The light was particularly bad in the kitchen (I took 14 shots in total!), it was a bit more green than that. However, I did make the pesto well before the meal was ready, and because I didn't put any lemon juice in (only zest) the basil oxidised, so it was definitely leaning toward the sludgy hue, rather than bright green
However, as ever, taste was not affected. I made the burgers as 'sliders' so they were relatively small (used a scone cutter to mould them) and then for a change, I rolled them in cornmeal, to make the outside crispy. Jack doesn't do this, but it adds negligibly to the cost, and makes for a different texture.
Today I am grateful for these 3 things;

Well, 10 minutes after jumping into bed last night, I jumped right back out and went orf to fetch the lightweight blanket. Turfed DP out of bed and went about affixing it between the cotton sheet and the cotton lightweight quilt.
Remind me what time of year it is again.........
The upshot was, it made the temperature in bed just right, cosy but not stuffy, and I have to say, an excellent night's sleep has been the resultDon't you love it when that happens?

In Need of Direction - I'm assuming that you're toasting soda bread like mad during our pleasant [STRIKE]winter[/STRIKE] summer months then:D I must give it a go, it'd solve having a 'quick' sweet treat to hand for DP when I can't be bothered to bake, or are on an economy drive with the oven use
I'm so glad that I have re-written the menu-planner, if only because the foodstuffs are more cool weather appropriate! I might well alter them around again. The ingredients in 'tonight's' intended dish, could be reorganised to make a much more cool weather dish, but it is best if made 24hrs in advance, so I may make it tonight for tomorrow IYSWIM, as I don't think the pavement splitting sunshineyness is due back for a day or two is it?
I must get on and start my shopping list for the new month's menu planner. I forgot to say, I have, now, included another new recipe that I have found into it. However, the beauty of this recipe is that it is a soup - that can be served hot, at room temp or cold even (although perhaps not in Blightly........) and I have the main ingredients in stockSo I'm quite chuffed at that, as I do like to make new to me recipes in my quest for living a rich life within our means
Right, best get shifting a tail-feather. I've made yoghurt, so have that to decant - if it is successful, fingers crossed - and snap to pack up etc etc.

Now give me the 60-70's and I'm pretty goodI have fond memories of saturday's as a child, where my mum would put her records (yes records!) on and the three of us would dance around the room while she did her housework.

supersaver - I had to look them up, I didn't know what they wereThe good thing about the sliders, well - apart from the smaller the round, the more pfaff it is to make 'em - is that you can make loads. I did a *double* amount of Jack's mix and I made 15 sliders out of it. As I don't bother with the egg, that's only 200g of lentils and a quantity of breadcrumbs (or porridge oats, as I use), in addition to the other ingredients, which doesn't break the bank, and I've a supply of snap/dinner components stashed away for another day :T They were a nice thing to make on a rainy weather day in...... summer :rotfl:
Today has been a day of two halves. For sure:D I was ready for a triple gin & hold the tonic by 8.30am, and this from a gal that doesn't really drink spirits! Still, the day improved on the whole, so we'll carry that feeling onward I think.......
The library yielded up a *new* veggie cookbook by a *personality*. Having had a quick peruse through - this is their 2nd book - I'm left wondering whether a *no-name* would have been given a book contract for writing the same tome. I can't find a single recipe that has the smidge, of originality about it. They are all 'meat-free' recipes that a) have been around for all time or b) have been around for long enough as we've become increasingly global in our tastes and culinary endeavours. Makes me so glad that I can borrow it for free. Don't think it'll stay at Greying Towers for long - someone else can have the benefit.
Dinner this evening was real *stick to yer ribs fare*I made Laura's BBQ Lentils although we opted for 'actual' polenta, rather than millet polenta - I did offer DP the choice, as they are both super quick to make up.
And I know that you're all sat around the PC nudging each other with yer elbows, exclaiming, 'eeee, would you look at that, Our Greying as lumps in her polenta....... well, I never.......'
Humpf!
However..... they are not *lumps*, I have plenty of frozen sweetcorn that I'm determined to use up. And I don't know about you, Dear Reader, but unless I am...... *mindful* about eating sweetcorn, it has a propensity to exit how it entered....... if y'all get my drift....... Therefore, I decided to be a right smarty pants and pop the sweetcorn into the simmering stock, blitz it with the stick blender so that it was blended/broken up, before I then began stirring in the cornmeal. It gave extra taste and an extra dimension to the polenta, but yes, to all intents and purposes, it does make it look lumpy
I topped it all off with a swirl of HM yoghurt (not a vegan option!) with some parsley and sumac scattered over it. All in all, yummyliciousEverything was from stores and it was, unfortunately, very weather appropriate eating
