Should I install my Vista upgrade?

Just before the release of Vista I purchased a laptop that was running on XP professional, but it came with a free Vista upgrade, which I got later on. Now my question is should I install it or not? Is it still beset with problems or should I take the plunge? MTIA

This is going to sound very repetative but:

What laptop is it? You may be able to find reviews/forums/blogs through Google that indicate how others have faired with the upgrade on that system.

Do you use any legacy programs, say those that you used to use with compatibility mode on XP? You'll need to check if they work on Vista.

Do you use any periphrals with your laptop? Check drivers for those and that they work with Vista. Some people have reported XP drivers working with Vista but that these sacrifice some functtionality, and are a 'quick fix' until the manufacturer of the hardware comes out with new drivers.

Remember there is a learning curve for Vista. If you use the laptop for work you may wish to wait until you have some free time.

Also double check the specs of your laptop, I'm sure I've read about some systems which came with Vista upgrades but that only just met the minimum requirements and that ran slow as tortoises.

I bought a toshiba laptop from pc world for 399, and am really pleased with it. I do find the Vista very slow though. I use xp at work and I prefer that. Put it this way, when I fire up the lappy I usually go off to make a cuppa to fill in time while it decides to set up. regards jinny :rolleyes:

I wouldnt downgrade to vista, unless you spent £1000 or more on your laptop in that case it will be a higherspec laptop and capable of running vista with some reasoanble speed. otherwise you will be waiting ages for everything to happen and wear your mouse/track pad buttons out agreeing to everything 3 times before getting to the bit you want. (then yu will find out how to turn the pester messages off)

What do you use your laptop for ? is it home use, or do you run business programs ? I "upgraded" to Vista and loved it for home use, but found as soon as I started to use for work there were serious compatability problems, so much so that I now have had to have my laptop set up for dual booting so I can now run in XP, the new stuff seems to work well but any older programs or drivers may struggle.

I have Vista Home Premium running on my ACER 3613WLMi.
Specs are

1.5GHz
1gb ram
And an onboard video adapter that takes 128 MB of memory from the ram.

Vista starts faster than XP did. I use it for Internet, Office, Web site building, photo editing, buring DVD,s and watching TV with absolutely no problem and with no difference to XP Doing these things speed wise.

Only thing I cant do now is Video editing but thats because the version of Pinnacle I use requires 2GB ram on vista

Only thing I have done is disable Aero and turn off user controls.

So the answer seems generally to be no then, as I only really use it for browsing the net and word processing ect. Ta.

Been there done that 3 times, and have promised myself not to go there again until next year

i have a 2 month old dual core compaq pressario(about 3 months old and £450) which came with vista, works fine

It was the same with XP... worked fine but lots of bugs.. SP1 came, then it was majorly used.. People still criticised but most people use now for their home pc.

For me, when SP1 comes out for Vista it will be usable on a permanent basis!
