I've lost the sound on my PC. The wee speaker icon that used to live in the bottom left hand corner has disappeared. Nothing shows as being wrong in Device Manager. Any suggestions?

I have this issue sometimes. When I restart the computer or boot after a crash I'll have no sound. I have to restart and the sound works again. As well for me no device conflicts.
If that doesn't help, what was the last thing you did before shutting down the computer? A program install, device change or settings change might have inadvertently done something.
In the case of my laptop it's only when I have to hard power-off the laptop when it crashes, I must then restart twice to get sound back. There is no fixable issue that I can find to fix it.

Reboot did not sort it0

Now sorted. Icon back via control panel. In sound control the mute boxes were checked which is spooky because it's only me thats been on the computer since the sound went and I certainly didn't tick the boxes in sound contrtol. Poltergeist methinks!0
