Last night, I accidentally booked a 1 night hotel stay via booking.com for the wrong date. I selected the previous month, electing 2nd-3rd Feb, rather than 2nd-3rd March.

2 main reasons for the error:
- The website date picker pops up 2 date controls showing you a 2 month view. I scrolled right to get to March, but then selected the date on the left calendar.
- It was late, and I have been sleep deprived.
- Having selected it, it was easy to confuse 02/02-03/02 with 02/03-03-03 (the numbers aren't massively dissimilar).

Anyway, the rate was a 'non refundable/non amendable' rate, but even so, booking.com said that it if it were a genuine mistake, they would usually try to help resolve the issue.
Unfortunately, the hotel are not prepared to do the same.

They wont cancel it (as it is a non cancellable rate), and they wont amend it to the March date, because unfortunately, there seems to be an event on nearby in March which means they only 'block book' 3 night stays in a row.

Do I have any way of getting my money back, perhaps through my credit card? The amount was about £71, transacted in a foreign currency.

I understood that if you purchased something remotely (online), and/or with a credit card, you had fair consumer protection (but perhaps, not if the mistake is yours?).

Thanks.
SC.

As it was a non refundable rate, then no.

Although if they re-book the room on those dates, then i think you should technically only be liable for costs e.g. Admin minus any loss on what they re sold the room for.

Not sure how you would go about doing this.

It complicates matters that your contract is with booking.com
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

If the supplier refuses, then there is little you can do except change your date and use the room for the date you booked. If this isn't practical offer the use to friends etc.

This is no different to any other booking - you make the mistake and expect understanding, but if they make a mistake customers want compensation - it's not surprising you get what you pay for.

I use LateRooms and always ensure I can cancel 48hrs in advance of the due date. It costs a few quid more, but I save in the long run.

can't see the credit card being an option as the hotel still has the room for you on the date you booked
You are likely just going to have to chalk this up to experience
  • The dates I actually need aren't available.
The Geneva Motor show is in town, so the hotels are either fully booked, or require a 'block booking' of a minimum of 3 days. (This is another problem entirely, but I can see rooms for other hotels a little further out, though they are more costly).

I understand that a non refundable rate means no refunds if you change your mind/can't make the trip, but I didn't think it excluded obvious errors (i.e when you contact them within 3 minutes of receiving the confirmation email).

Its a hotel by the airport in Geneva. I was getting into the airport at 10pm on the Monday, and leaving at 5am on the Tuesday (for a 7am flight).

Anyone here want it? For sale to the highest bidder.

Services booked for a set date are excluded from the cooling off period I believe.
There are no exceptions for being tired.

Massively annoying and possibly even a bit shoddy, but nothing unlawful. No rights.

Anything within 20km of Geneva airport is going to be full/have restrictions that weekend whereas for the Feb dates they're less likely to fill the rooms.

Assuming you've flights booked and you do need a room for a single night on the March date then you're likely to be digging deep and ending up with a room in Lausanne/Vevey/Montreux close to the station so you can grab a train to/from GVA
