American side by side fridge freezer fault.

Options
Hi. I have an American side by side fridge freezer made by GE in Mexico. Model Number GCE23LGWAFBB. Serial Number HR412492. I chose this particular one because it came with a 5 year guarantee and we've had it 6 years now. We did have one problem after about 3 years which was fixed under the guarantee but other than that it's worked fine.

We noticed a week ago the food in the freezer was not as frozen as it should be. An engineer came out and said it's probably the fan motor. We put the temperature on the highest level and since then it seems to be working again which is a little confusing. I found a fan motor on Espares for about £100 which was quite a decent price and looking on the web fitting it is not too much hassle. Problem is now, is it the fan motor? Has anyone had similar problems? Can it be anything else? If anyone has any info on this I would be most grateful.

I hope I have provided enough info.

Thanks very much Chris.

How hard did the engineer look? It could well be the fan but could be other things. I assume he means the fan that blows air over the evaporator then into the freezer. It could be the fan, the evaporator could be covered in ice, could be a timer, a temperature sensor... One cheap & easy cure can be to turn it off for 24 hours, if ice is the problem then it will melt. Of course if the ice is caused by another fault (heater for example) then it will re-occur.

Bear in mind before spending much that good side by sides are now under £800.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. Update on this problem, turned it off for 24 hours and fully defrosted it. Been on now 2 days or so and seems to be working fine however, the ice machine does not seem to be making ice as quick as it used to. Still think I have a problem but just don't know what. if anyone else has any ideas I would be keen to know your thoughts/experiences.
    Thanks Chris
