I'm early 30s so would prefer to leave thst to the 20s crowd.

Especially as it's a short break. I'm used to 4* star minimum so want to be comfortable. I don't have budget constraints too much or want to make friend as such. I'll talk to others out and about sight seeing that'd fine

Well, I'm in my fifties and have sometimes stayed in 5 star places.

I recently used a hostel for a short break in Barcelona and had a really good time.

I'd second that. I regularly stay in hostels (though I'm in the "target demographic"!) and it's increasingly common to see older people staying there - though they'd often be in the single rooms and not the dorm.

Excluding the trademark loon, they've all been treated respectfully and, if they wanted to, were free to join the younger people with whatever they're up to. Just make sure you check the reviews carefully to find one with the type of atmosphere you'd be comfortable in.
