central heating question

Hi All,
My flat has a fully central heating system .
two questions I have is ,
when I set the temperature dial in my hall way , does that let the radiator run until every room reaches that temperature or does each room has a temepreature sensor ?
for instance when i set it to 20 degree in the hall way and I have 2 bedrooms and 1 living room and 1 hall way (entrance to the home), assuming the dial knob is in hall way , does the hall way have to reach 20 degree before the central heating is switched off ?
it could be one of the rooms door is closed and the temperature reaches over 30-40 degree while the hall way is stil 10-15 degree , so would the system continue to run and make the room even hotter?
2. do I need to put cleaning solutions as sold in screw fix to clean my radiators and protect them from rust ? if so how often ?
many thanks

1. unless you have a very sophisticated zonal system (which given your description is unlikely) covering each room that you can set temps for each independently then you have only 1 thermostat which controls the whole system so yes only when the hall reaches 20 deg will the system switch off and it will come back on when it drops below 20. That is why you do not set it at 20 if the other rooms will reach higher temps!! Didn't your parents explain such basics to you?
2. given the naivety of your questions it would be much better if you did not try to do anything to the system at all. Whether you simply add solution or clean the system before doing so depends on a number of factors so you should pay a plumber to do it for you0 -
Well re 1, i thought that is the case . The reason i asked is because i have shut the radiator in the hall way and the small bedroom and seeing the bedrooms getting very hot hence why i thought i only have one thermostat . Is it easy to relocate the thermostat or install a wireless thermostat?
Re second one , i saw a cleaner in screw fix and hence why i asked the question . I can do it and nothing hard . I can always research it and by posing the initaial question i was hoping for a helpful reply not sarcastic one like urs.
I do the bleedings myself0 -
So you have two controls, one the radiators in each room and the thermostat in the hall. It's a matter of finding the right temperatures in each room you use by adjusting the radiators in the bedrooms so they are slightly cooler than the living rooms. Then the living rooms down until a comfortable but affordable temperature is reached.
Ideally you should have TRVs on each radiator but if you haven't don't worry, just use the on / off valve to find a comfortable temperature in each room.0 -
if by trv you are referring to below then yes all my radiators do have it

however the problem I historically had was one room will get quite hot which I find out tonight is because the radiator in the hallway is off hence the thermostat never knows when it is 20 degree or whatever i set it to .
is there a wireless thermostat one can buy?0 -
Quick solution tonight is turn the hall radiator on half way and turn down the hot room. Assuming you have the heating on 24/7 adjust slowly tomorrow until it is comfortable.0

many thanks. NO I have the heating on as and when for few hours .
24/7 is very expensive while I am not at home majority of the day0 -

thanks so what would you describe the differences between the thermostat and the radiator trv ?
is the trv restricting flow hence trying to achieve a lower temp ?
I am thinking of a wireless portable thermostat so that I can carry it and leave it in my bedroom so once this bedroom reaches 20 degree all the rest will be off0 -
In principle the trv is the same as the thermostat - you set it to a temperature (usually represented by a setting 0-5) and once the room reaches that temperature, the trv closes the valve and stops the flow through the radiator. The difference between TRVs and the wall thermostat is that TRVs are generally less precise and work gradually - they usually work by an expanding plug (for example wax) rather than having a temperature sensor. So they will tend to open and close gradually.stranger12 wrote: »is the trv restricting flow hence trying to achieve a lower temp ?
Many such products are available. However you can't just buy one and use it. It has to be installed into your system - this is DIYable but based on your questions it may be easier to get a plumber in to do it.I am thinking of a wireless portable thermostat so that I can carry it and leave it in my bedroom so once this bedroom reaches 20 degree all the rest will be off0 -
I got one of the honeywell digital trv to test as below
http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0051UHFEI/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=569136327&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000KNE738&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_r=1AJ6PW368E05RYN09DYZ
it is meant to be like thermostat and more accurate than my analog trv .
following that , I will install it for all other rooms .
finally I may change the thermostat with honeywell wireless.
My current thermostat is honeywell analog so I am trying to look at the wiring to find out if I can install the wireless thermostat and just re wire it .
As I understand the wireless thermostat will have a relay and the relay is what I need to wire.
looking at my current analog thermostat , I see a live, neutral ,ground and something else so will need to work out what it is .
I am not a noob and fairly competent once I have had a chance to research the topic . I can work my way around it .
For instance I had no clue what trv was and I know quite a bit more know so after doing a bit more research on wireless thermostat I can install it0
