cool just found a place in london that does both check (service and gas safety check from £50 ).

I emailed them to find out .

I also read that I need to check their gas card and check that against the gas safety website to ensure they are qualified and registered engineers.

This seems quite cheap so I would suggest you check the engineer has a gas safe registration.

If you are unsure whether the CO alarm is reasonably new I would get it checked or buy another one.

Do you have any other gas appliances? If so you really ought to get them all checked on a regular basis.

  • I only have one other flat and all is electric and current requirement for it is every 10 years .

don't worry , while I may look for cost saving , I always evaluate it and don't do it for sake of it .
I don't play with law and life of people . a life of tenant is worth much more than £50 -100 a year !

The carbon monoxide detector will have a date on it for when it expires, if you can't find the date then replace it.

I recently paid about £70 plus vat for a gas safety check, which checked over my boiler and hob and this included servicing the boiler. It is recommended to have a boiler serviced annually (often the warranty requires it) but lots of people don't bother. If I had concerns, as you for some reason do, I would just get someone who knows what they're doing to give it a once over. It really isn't worth trying to DIY with gas, the risks are just too great.

It's worth doing for any gas appliance as the omission of Carbon Monoxide is odourless and fatal. All gas appliances should be checked by a professional gas safe certified engineer.

Worth mentioning however that whilst the legal requirement is annual, the certificate is only as good as the day inspected. Any flaw/leak can occur post checks so be vigilant, test your all your alarms regularly and stay as safe as you can

You should also have a carbon monoxide alarm in all rooms if you have open fires/wood burners in your home and chimneys should also be smoke tested/cleaned annually. I think the former is a fairly new regulation however.
