Keen to do animation can you help.

Some advice please, I need to change my laptop my requirements are generally modest you know the usual internet use watching films, office or similar. My only other consideration is I am very interested in animation (purely as an novice) so what spec should I be looking at and does anyone know any reasonably priced soft ware to get me started.
Any responses appreciated thanks.

There's only one bed and there's only one prayer;

    Depends on the type of animation you are thinking of doing.

    Old style Cartoon animation could probably be done using virtually any laptop available at the moment.

    If it's 3D animation then you might need a laptop with a bit more grunt (good CPU and good quality graphics card).

    Their are a lot of open source / free software you can use to do either.

    Simple animation (series of drawings, photographed with a webcam and made into a sequence) you can do on pretty much anything, but if you want 3D textured natural movement a bit more oomph is useful at render time. What kind of animation appeals to you?

    Get an old copy of paint shop pro. It comes with animation shop included. Should be cheap or even free.

    One of my friends children did some animation with a camera on a tripod and a laptop using Lego figures.

    I'm not sure what software was used but they certainly didn't buy anything and the results were very impressive.
