I have a 1930's semi, which had a carport/garage thingie when we moved in 20 years ago, but it was really delapidated so we knocked it down. Now I am in real need of extra storage space and was thinking of getting another one put up. What I want is a wind and watertight unit, with one of those plastic roofs on, an up and over door on the front and a frame with door and window on the back. One side would be the house, and the other would be made of that plastic stuff or similar. Would I need to dig footings for this, and would I need planning permission? Finally, do any of you have any kind of ballpark figure for costs? The finished thing would be about 12 ft x 7ft. Thanks!

well, it depends on the exact nature of the storage space. Planning permission is not usually a problem as long as one end is not closed up(bricked up or dead ended). As for actually obtaining planning permission, I think you have to. I am not sure however what you mean by a plastic side, I don't recall ever seing one on storage space. I do however have a carport of my own that has no posts and it is a fair size. It has a door on one end and the other is fully open with an open side too. I did not need planning permission and mine is probably 25ft by 10ft. Do check though.
