We was paying £30 per month direct debit to npower for our electrity but the last two bills were estimated so because the last bill they had a reading they have now upped my direct debit payments to £78 per month.

I simpily cannot afford to pay that much more i could possibly pay £50-£60 per month at a push.I rang them and the lady was not at all helpful she just said i had to pay £78 .

I wondered where do i go from here i do not know what to do .

  • I reckon ask to speak to a supervisor/manager, usually will get you places.

Ask to spread the debt over a longer period (which is prob why youre paying more) advising you are willing to pay etc. as long as they are gonna get their cash they dont really care

They normally aim to collect under-payments over the next year, or the remainder of the payment plan year.

If you've had two estimated bills, you should have checked the meter yourself each time and worked out that you were getting under-charged. It's not your supplier's responsibility to know how much electricity you are using.

If £78 is the correct amount based on your current usage and the amount you owe them (spread over a sensible period), you don't really have any reason not to pay £78.

i had this with scottish power. they said i was in debt of £83.00 so upped my DD from 59 a month for gas and lecky to £90.00!. i wasnt having that. the easiest way to get back to normal is to pay up what you owe straight away, then you can either change supplier, or look at a new tariff with n power to lower your bill. mine is now set at £64.oo so it was worth me doing it that way

If you owe the money you owe the money, no point in getting into hissy-fits.

If you haven't used that much energy, then get them to correct the meter readings and simply remember to make sure they have the right readings.

Do people not keep an eye on their energy usage and ensure meter reads are correct??

Being as they are only obliged to read meters every two years, and from your information it looks like it only went nine months without being read, you are not in a very strong position I'm afraid. The best you can do is, as suggested above, try to negociate with them for a longer repayment period but they are not obliged to do this.

In future I would recommend you keep an eye on your bills to stop this situation happening again.

A standing order is all very well, but it wouldn't stop nPower tring to disconnect carlos700 if they wanted to. People seem to view standing orders as a magical cure for all ills, but just because you set the amount doesn't mean the utility provider will agree to it. Otherwise I could set a standing order for a fiver a month and use a hundred quids worth of power.
