trying to install openelec on a portable usb drive , loaded and running , openelec formats and creates a 20meg space

I want to use the additional space on the drive to store MP4s , and to be able to add them via windows ,

everytime I load openelec , then come back to windows to sort the remainder of the drive out , it corrups openelec

what perameters are needed for the spare space , ?

or do I need another version of Linux , that boots to openelec , that will allow me to use (and see) the rest of the drive
