OP - You need to check your employer's absence policy too when you return, as your length of absence may be close to triggering an absence review, especially within the first 6 months of employment.

You started in this job very recently and are already on sick leave (which of course can happen) and, more importantly, trying to swap holidays for sick leaves while travelling to Ireland...

I can't predict a great career for you at that company.

That's not how I read the opening post. They were assuming they would be taking holiday when in Ireland and therefore the self certification would be fine because they would not have been sick for 7 days..

Agreed. They've already said they don't plan on swapping their holiday days for sick days.

Also Ireland is hardly the end of the world! Depending on where in the UK the OP is its at most just over an hours flight.

I think it's perfectly reasonable to be too ill for work but be able to get on a plane for an hour.

If OP had Man Flu then, yes they would be well enough to get on a plane and travel to Ireland.

If they had real flu than i doubt it. If OP was well enough to travel to Ireland then they should have done their xmas eve shift before setting off on their holiday.

I would imagine getting to work involves way less effort than making a flight to Ireland.

And 'perfectly reasonable' is quite the stretch.

There are certain circumstances where that may be true. However I can't see that this is one of them!

If somebody is off for a long period, perhaps with a mental illness or recovering from a major operation or injury then going on holiday may well be beneficial. However, even then it needs to be agreed with the firm to prevent any misunderstandings.
  • In both places where I have worked, if sickness lead to the date of statutory holidays/ annual leave days - a sick note was required.
They paid for it admittedly, but obviously its to stop people having longer holidays than their leave requires.
And also leaving the same staff every year to do the shifts between Xmas/after bank holidays etc as a pattern emerges ;)

I think it depends on the type of work among other things. The few days I have taken off ill from my current job I could have made it in to work. I would then have made an unproductive hash of things and had to later redo most of it. Thankfully, my manager is fonder of good work than of people just being present and accepts it is sensible to take the time off.

I wouldn't enjoy travelling in that state and might well forget to pack my passport or something, but am sure I could do it.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.
