Stop wasting your time on dealing with incompetent and lying idiots over a phone.
Go to your branch and tell them that you want to lodge a formal complaint. They have to help you to do this.
From now on keep a record of all your communications with the bank, including the time and the name(s).

No way the transfer could take more than a week.
Something went wrong, and you are unlikely to get this resolved over a phone unless you are very persistent and get your call escalated high enough to someone competent and capable of doing something real.

If I were you, I would think about plan B that you should have had when going abroad without having made sure that your money arrived to the destination.

Midland Bank ceased to exist in 1999. Which bank(s) are you dealing with?

I guess it's 'intermediary' bank, not Midland.

I transferred money from my UK bank to my son's german account in about 2 days. It was the economy service which could have taken 5 days but was much quicker. Got sent copies of stuff by post to show that it had been done.
  • SEPA payments would have credited the Euro acount by the end of the next working day PROVIDED the information such as IBAN and BIC numbers were correct in the first place.

I think OP has omitted some info here.

I think it wasn't necessarily SEPA as the transfer could be in ££.

Wouldn't an intra-European SWIFT payment have to be completed by 2 working days to be SEPA compliant?!

Midland Bank didn't cease to exist but changed its legal name to HSBC Bank but it's old named lived on in it's SWIFT codes.

E.G. MIDLGB22 is used to by HSBC to process Nationwide's international payments.

That's just a code and just about the only 'visible' remnant of what used to be Midland Bank. There has not been a legal entity called Midland Bank since late in 1999 and you have not been able to do business with Midland Bank for the last 15 years.

    From http://www.hsbc.co.uk/1/2/about-us/history/uk-history
To communicate a clear and consistent identity to the world, Midland Bank was renamed HSBC Bank and by September 1999, the High Street transformation was complete.

As HSBC encompassed many operations across the globe, the Midland Bank name was replaced in order to create a clear and consistent identity to the worldwide market. With thousands of branches to rebrand and millions of customers to inform, it was a project that required meticulous planning and managing.

By September, the High Street was transformed and the rebrand was complete. Today HSBC is consistently ranked as amongst the top global brands and is seen in towns and cities across the world. From Swindon to Shanghai and Bognor to Buenos Aires, HSBC is widely identified as a global force in banking.
