moussaka

dont know which board to post this on. Years ago I mad a mousaka and I know I used sliced cold pototoes. Well Lydl are selling aubergines at 23p so bought two but could not find a recipe that included pototoes. Used a Delia one and have froze the mousaka but would love to make a big batch whilst aubergines are so cheap. Anybody got a good and easy recipe.
Thanks

There's a moussaka recipe using potatoes in the "Dinner Lady" cookbook. Unfortunately just taken it back to the library yesterday so can't help but maybe you could find it somewhere on the net.

Hi, I regularly make moussaka but with pork mince as I prefer it to lamb.

Just put a layer of cold sliced potatoes in the bottom of the dish. Cook the aubergine slices on a high grill and set aside. Cook up your mince with tomato puree, tin tomatoes, onion, garlic, spices etc and set aside to cool. Layer the mince and aubergine with final layer of aubergine on top. Make a white sauce and flavour with nutmeg, put this on top of the aubergine layer and sprinkle with grated cheese.
Cook for around 40 mins on 190 and voila!

Sorry can't help with the recipe - tried a Good Food mag one the other month but it didn't have potatoes - we decided it would be better with potatoes in so I may try it and just layer the potatoes in with the aubergine.

Thanks for the tip - I paid 99p for an aubergine last week!!! Off to Lidl tomorrow I think ;)

I followed the "How to make moussaka" video on the website videojug.com. It was lovely - best moussaka I have made in ages.

    Thanks tirednurse,

I promised Mr Pink on our honeymoon in Greece 22 years ago that I would make him a moussaka when we got home and thanks to you mentioning the videojug recipe I finally did it tonight! It was a bit fiddly and there were loads of dishes to wash up afterwards, but it was delicious and he loved it! I certainly won't leave it 22 years before I make it again! :D

I agree that it was a bit fiddly. Next time I make it I will double up and freeze some. I used the frozen lamb mince stuff that they sell in Asda - it was lovely - none of those horrible globby gristly bits.
I have been to Greece many times and found the videojug recipe as good as any that I have tasted in Greece.
I am glad that you and Mr Pink enjoyed it - it must have tasted so much better after the 22 year wait!

thanks for this. Sounds nice and easy, I can use a bol sauce which I cook each week. Found a pack of lamb mince in our local supermarket for half price so put it in freezer, hope Lydl still have the aubergines on offer, this will make a really cheap meal. I love Moussaka. I stopped buying ready meals when I came on this site to save money and its amazing I have turned into a cook.
