Plasterboard Advice Please

Options
We are overboarding a wall in our kitchen, using soundbloc plasterboard, fixing them onto wooden battens which are already in place.....what is the best thing to put behind the plasterboards, in between the battens ? .....someone suggested kingspan/recticel, to fill the void.......any ideas ?.......Jack

  • If the main reason is noise reduction the best is knauf acoustic insulation, which comes in a roll. If it's minimising heat loss then either celotex or kingspan which is sheet based, is best. Make sure to wear a suitable dust mask when fitting either.
  • Thanks for the reply......noise and insulation are neither really a problem....it's just that the old plaster is in such bad condition, I think it's easier and quicker to cover the lot up, especially as the battens are already in place.......someone years ago has obviously thought the same, and have used those old wallboards that you used to get, but didn't put anything behind them, I am using soundbloc as I have got some very cheap from work.......Jack

  • If there aren't any acoustic or thermal requirements then soundbloc boards are OTT, but if they are for free then carry on. Bear in mind they are a lot heavier. Make sure you use min 38mm drywall screws, the battens are no greater than 600mm apart and screws 250mm apart.

O.k, Thanks for that, someone suggested using polystyrene sheets, but I was a bit concerned that they would be a fire risk, although they would be sealed between the wall and the plasterboard you never know.......I assume that recticel/celotex/kingspan is fire proof ? as it is used in roof spaces........Jack

Standard plasterboard gives 30 minutes fire resistance when sealed. As above if you don't have accoustic or thermal requirements then use mineral wool as its cheaper.
Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!
  • Thanks for that, tomorrow I am going to remove some of the old wallboards, and have a good look, to see what it is really like behind them, although I already know that it is not very good, loose plaster etc. and have a measure up..............Jack

thinnest loft roll insulation you can get

if its going between small battens you might still need to 'tear' the roll along its short edge so its even thinner.
  • Thank You, during a tea break from sorting out my floor, I have removed one of the wallboards.......not as bad as expected, BUT.....whoever put them up has used 16x38 doorstop for the battens.....this means that I will have to make them thicker if I use 25mm kingspan.....more work, but well worth it I'm sure......Jack

  • Just a quick deviation from the plasterboard topic, today whilst removing an old carpet, in preparation for a new one, we discovered old red quarry tiles.....anyone have any tips, or tricks, to clean them, as we may use some as a feature when the new carpet goes down......Jack

  • Spent most of today doubling up the battens.....16x38 doorstop finishes at 12 mm, so 25mm rectecel should compress that 1 mm...although the walls are in an awful state, at least they are fairly straight, with no bulges.......we will find out tomorrow......Jack
