Morning All

Firstly Merry Christmas
We upgraded our son today from XBox 360 to XBox One, he was very pleased so we plugged it in and hooked it up to the tv in the living room switched it on then, oh XBox needs to do an update, OK then 500mb surprisingly quick for Microsofts servers took about 20 minutes to download and install, great lets play.

He got 6 games all in all to begin with, the bundle came with 2 Assassins Creeds and Forza 5 all need to be downloaded, well we know from previous experience this will take an age so are going to set them off later, 3 other games all on disc GTA V, Fifa 15 and the obligatory Minecraft great lets get going on GTA V then, disc in oh no needs to update 1.4gb, 1.4 gb that is a new game not an update! OK lets get it done, 1%............2%.......10 minutes later 3%............10 minutes later 4% scrap it do it later try Fifa 15, disc in oh needs to update 500mb a bit more sensible (I know I know the words sensible and EA I would not normally use in the same sentence but hey compared to Fifa 14 updates!) start it off, 1%.........10 minutes later 2%.........10 minutes later 3%............ grrrrrrrrrrr lets try minecraft then, another 500mb update but this downloaded and installed in less than 20 minutes total.

Nightmare, not been thought out very well these updates and not being able to play out of the box without waiting hours for this that and the other to download, worst part once you tell it to download the update there does not seem to be any way to be able to abort so you can have some quick gameplay, Microsoft, EA, Rockstar etc need to be a bit more realistic on these downloads I have a 6mb at best broadband connection but the choke seems to be their side with their servers as minecraft downloaded its update and installed it in less than 20 minutes, result frustrated son on Christmas Day gee thanks Microsoft and Co! So glad I handed you a BIG pile of my hard earned cash now!

Also it has a 500gb hard drive so why on earth is there only just under 300gb available for storage?

Rant over and wisdom welcome :)

Well a 500GB HD doesnt give 500GB of storage space even just for a storage only drive.
The One drive has an OS and set aside space for specific usage.
In future. Set up the console ahead of Xmas, boot up the games and apply the updates.
The server 'delays' are due to so many consoles/games coming online for xmas and increasing server load.

Ahhh I am not alone! I too have just gone through the same thing only it was not an upgrade it was an xmas gift for my two grandsons. After ages for the downloads and then the installation we found that to get some of these games to function to there fallest extent we have to BUY XBOX live.
Yet. Another money grab by Microsoft.

So after spending all day downloading Forza 5 we came to play it and could not sign in as UK servers down so would not let us even play the game............perfect!

Here's your reason, every other new Xbox One owner is downloading updates from Microsoft's servers. If I were you I would have picked a game and left it to D/l, with my PS4 updates take a few moments anyway...

As for the hard drive space, I'm sure you could plug an external drive into the Xbone should you run low on space? might be worth looking into...

Don't lose heart, the PS4 and Xbone are great consoles and well worth the patience
