Flight Changes

Hi all
I booked flights with Thomas cook leaving Gatwick to Grenoble on 18th Jan at 6am and returning grenoble at 10am.
I booked the flights on 18th October and have today had a call saying the flights have been cancelled due to maintenance and that I have been put on another flight leaving Grenoble at 2.25 pm (8.25 hours late) and then leaving grenoble 17.40 (7.40 hours late).
This typically would not be a huge deal other than the fact we are from Newcastle and have a train booked from Gatwick to Newcastle @ 3pm. The train fares have risen considerably and as we booked an advance ticket it will cost us £10 per person plus the difference in fare prices to change.
Can Thomas Cook just change the flights like this? Are we entitled to any compensation?
Look forward to any help
Thanks

no EU compensation as you have been given more than 14 days notice. Airlines do not take responsibility for journeys before/after the flights (so your contract finishes when they get you back to Gatwick and anything after this is not their concern)
Check your travel insurance to see if they can offer anything0 -
If your flights have been cancelled, you are entitled to re-routing in accordance with EU reg EC 261/2004. If other more suitable flights are available, ask to be re-routed on those flights. The Reg doesn't say that you can only be re-routed on Thomson.Posts are not advice and must not be relied upon.0

what is your return date? If the 25th Jan it looks like you are on the Easyjet flight in the afternoon but there is also a 10:20 Easyjet flight that lands in Gatwick at 10:55. You should be able to tell Thomas Cook that the alternative they have offered is not suitable and ask to be moved to an earlier flight (or accept refund for the flight and book the earlier one)0
