Hi
I have a lovely Lhasa Apso who is a wonderful addition to our family but I'm starting to question paying £18 every 6 weeks for her hair to be cut. (Its only £4 for mine!!!!) I knew when we got her I'd have to have her clipped on a regular basis and now feel a bit guilty by wondering..........
In true MSE style has anyone else had bought any clippers and done it themselves, and what sort of results did they achieve etc etc.

Hi, we have an American Cocker, who takes a lot of grooming. We have only ever had her professionally groomed twice (shes nearly 2 now) Both times have cost us a lot more than £18  dog groomers are hard to find where we live, you usually have to book a month in advance, and having dogs, kids and work to contend with, it became a pain trying to get her an appointment to be groomed, the last time we got her done, the groomer came to the house, very sneaky on our part, as we watched her closely to see how it was done. Shes a very placid dog, so we bought a wahl dog grooming kit from Argos and now do it ourselves. We got the one with the smaller clippers to do around the face, but to be honest, this is noisier than the full size clippers. The kit comes with a dvd showing various dogs being groomed. If you think your dog will stand for you and allow you to do her yourself, I would say give it a go, it does take a while to get started, but I'm happy with the way I do our dog, she looks just as good as the professional grooms shes had. You could maybe see if you could get a kit on e-bay, or a Lhaso Apso forum may give you an idea of the sort of kit you need to groom her at home. I find I use the scissors more than the clippers on Belle.

Lhasa Apso are not a clipped breed , if well groomed you should get away with just clipping under the tail and sissor around the eyes . After brushing always comb to find any tangles left behind under the top layer of the coat . If you want a short coat to make life easier you can clip or sissor the back and leave the legs and and face longer ,this way your dog will still look like the breed . As regards to the cost £18 is a fair price to pay ,there is a lot of work involved and it takes about 1-2 hours to do a good job . I am a dog groomer (have been for 28years now) , I get a lot of Apso's in that never see a brush or comb and end up having to clipp them completely off .Never pay more than you have too0

Wirehair: Thank you for your reply.
Whilst not wishing to do my dog groomer out of a job, and I understand £18 isn't too much for the wonderful job they do, I do need to cut back financially. Do you think I will be able to keep her tidy with an Argos style clipper set? I understand about the knotting under the top layer and frequently have to trim around the eyes between appointments anyway. (I do keep her tail, ears and top knot, long as well.)
Your opinion would be appreciated.

The pet clippers you can get in places like argos work quite well on clean dry coat , although I have never used them I have been told they clog up if the coat is dirty and matted . I should think they would suit you as long as you keep up to date with the grooming. Good luck and let me know how you get on.Never pay more than you have too0

We've always kept Westhighland Terriers and I would never consider clipping them ourselves:eek:     I think a good proffesional clip from the dog groomer looks amazing and Im sure the dog knows it looks good too:D We usually paid £28 for a clip including nails, ears etc every 3 months.

i used to clip my dog. and i gave up on the 4th haircut. clippers get in a right mess. they work then they dont!, and my poor old dog was more stressed than me in the end. itsvery very hard.you wouldnt put a boiler in yourself unless yourve been trained too. same goes with this one!:DYou're not drunk if you can lie on the floor without holding on0
