It's unreasonable to expect a cashier to know how long a cheque from overseas will take to clear on a country-by-country basis. Telling you the maximum likely time reduces complaints.0

That discretion is more likely to be used for smaller amounts. For larger sums you are likely to have to wait for clearance.
