My PC now takes over 5 minutes for the internet to become active and useful. When I switch it on i have time to play a game of free-cell before the internet works. It works well enough when its on its just a long wait. Any suggestions would be welcome. PC is a dell i3.With windows 7 Home premium. Internet is Virgin just about there highest.

There looks to be a lot of stuff there that you probably don't always need.
I'd suggest opening msconfig (just type msconfig and hit enter in the search box in the start menu).

Look at the startup tab and uncheck all the boxes that you don't use every time you start up the computer. A lot of things there are just to make them "quicker" to start or are auto-updaters that run in the background. Unchecking any of the boxes here won't remove or disable a program, but it will mean it doesn't start to run as soon as you boot up.

The only one I have set to run at startup on my PC is my anti-virus. Then try a restart and see if this helps - if there is something you don't like you can choose to revert the changes and come on to ask about something specific.

From your post, I'd guess you'll be unchecking boxes for apple stuff (incl. itunes), sky drive, updaters for a few things etc.

Wow - the sheer amount there must take an age to load :)

Although the 'unknown owner' entries are just from a user name change probably.

Go through the list especially the BHOs and toolbar entries. Remove any you don't need/want. Skydrive and Skype I'd keep. Anything realplayer can go and that canon network scanner entry too along with the lastpass entries.

Also, run msconfig and uncheck any things you don't want to run on startup - the fewer the better imo.

Then go to programs and features removing anything you don't need/use.

Run ccleaner manually (don't have it auto-run) and also run its registry cleaning tool.

You might also consider Microsoft security essentials as an alternative antivirus software - removing your existing one which may be consuming extra system resources.

Edit: the google update and flashupdate entries you can do without also.

No No no niet nein non etc what a joke
  • Sounds like a hardware issue, try turning off your virgin router for a minute then back on again. Try being hard-wired to the router and see how long it takes to get connected. May be a problem with your wifi card. Or are you connected by Ethernet cable already?
    just a few thoughts
    Friendly greeting!

    Presumably you've had issues?

It's been my only antivirus program for the past 3 years. Low system usage and absolutely zero problems. Perfect for my o/c gaming rig.

No issues it is not fit for purpose check on http://www.av-comparatives.org/ and if you care to search for Microsoft's own thoughts ...
On your gaming rig fine but get out of the comfort zone then hey good luck

My positive experience with it is likely due to a combination of factors including not least my high browser security settings.

I must admit to having read a few negative reviews myself but the OP here is concerned with his system being slowed down. Security Essentials certainly does have very low system usage. Even during scans there is no noticeable impact on performance.

@ the OP - I'd also recommend you download and run mbam - malwarebytes anti-malware.

nothing wrong with avast, however you really need to do a custom install and do not install the extra modules, you only need the web, mail and file shields. The extra modules have become a slight pain, and not required.

Agree with the msconfig comments. If still a problem then run the Task Manager by typing Ctrl+Shift+Esc then
    1. look at Processes tab (ensure all processes for all users selected)
    2. order on CPU and see what, if anything, is using CPU (aim is to get System Idle at 100%)
    3. if the Process using CPU is svchost.exe then you'll need to look at its Services to find out what is using CPU

OR, if you're organised and have a good image backup, it may be quicker to reinstall.
If you put your general location in your Profile, somebody here may be able to come and help you.

Many thanks to all. Ended up I had about 20 PUP's. Not that I know what they are but deleted and PC is running normally.
