Solicitors Fees

I bought a property in April 2004 and still owe the solicitor a small amount of money.
Having now been made redundant but fortunate to find employment, I am slowly paying off outstanding monies owed. However, my solicitor has advised that they want their payment in full or will arrange to get the balance owing from my mortgage supplier.
Does anyone know if the solicitor is in his rights to do so?

I am puzzled by this and have certainly never heard of it before. I don't see how they expect to get the money from your mortgage supplier. I am also a bit puzzled about how they completed your purchase with fees outstanding as your completion statement should have detailed everything owing and they should have insisted you paid the balance up front.
I am only guessing but is the amount oustanding the fee payable by you for the solicitor to act for the mortgage company on the purchase? That would make sense, because they could have overlooked it on their completion statement.
Your mortgage supplier surely has no right to pay out money unauthorised by you so I think your solicitor is talking rubbish. Perhaps someone else on here may have come across this before.
Apart from this issue, it does seem unreasonable that having accepted payment by instalments, that they should now take this attitude. Personally I would tell them that as they have accepted instalments in the past, you consider that a verbal agreement to pay your debt that way and that you are not prepared to change it now.
Provided they had the correct information on the back of their bill, they are entitled to charge you interest on the outstanding amount.0
