Reccomendation for a Replacement HDD for my Laptop....Please

My HDD is "on it's last legs", it's IDE compatable and I think it spins at 4200rpm with 2mb of cache.

I would like to replace it with a similar size capacity or a bit bigger (see signature) but don't want to spend to much. I'm not sure whether it's worth paying the extra to go up to 7200 rpm, or for that matter whether my lappy will handle it?

Also anyone know of a good shopbot for computer supplies and accessories etc?

Thank you :-)

It is totally up to you when buying the drive. If you feel you could benefit from the 7100 rpm drives and are prepared to pay the premium then go for it, a faster hard drive always improves a system. even if it is only by a couple of milli seconds. but the drives are a bit more expensive.

If money is tight then go for the bigest 8mb cache, 5400rpm drive you can afford, you can never have too much drive space the latest size is 160GB and they are more expensive so go for a 120GB they are much more reasonable.
  • trust me, the 7200rpm is not worth all that precious cash unless you are an on demand, impatient computer user. I have a Western digital 120gb ide which set me back just under £50 inc delivery. 5400rpm, an 8mb cache and plenty quick enough. It was a bargain!!!!

Chek ths site out. Very helpful I find. Also, don't forget an anti-static wristband when dealing with components. Hope this helps.
