New Rental - Goods Removal

Hi everyone. I'm shortly going to be moving into my first rented property and have a small (possibly daft) query.

In terms of things needed to purchase for the new property e.g. iron, hoover, ironing board etc. and other general stuff that I need, do people tend to buy all of this in advance and have the removals people transfer it all from their old place to their new? Or do people normally move in and buy all that stuff when they're in the new area?

I don't have an inventory yet, so I don't want to end up buying & shipping stuff only to find that one was already there to begin with.

Many thanks.

Wait until you move in. That way you know what's already there. And you don't have to transport it between properties.

Wait. get them when you are there. There are few things which you are likely to need the second you get in through the door, and it will be much less hassle to get them once you've moved. If you'll be buying new, you can do your research and decide what to get, before you move, then just buy or order once you are in.

Assuming it is a furnished property, the essentials such as a bed and cooker should be there, and then once you are in you can make a final decision about what else you need/want.

  • Hoover, ironing board etc are all small enough that you can transport them in a car so wouldn't need removal people.
Have you got much furniture to move or are you starting completely from scratch? bigger items you could order in advance but have delivered directly to the flat after you've moved in.
  • Thanks for the advice guys.

I have no access to a car, and my employer will cover removal costs anyhow :)
