Eon economy 7 meter

Hi I'm new here and have had a few problems that I would like help with, after hearing about economy7 and doing some reaseach on here and else where I calculated it would be far cheaper for me to have an economy7 meter fitted, I was on a pre paid meter from the last tenants and this was needless to say workin out very expensive for me and my family, the house hold uses over 50% of the energy at night with washing machine tumble dryers and storage heaters, so I called eon the existing provider, who agreed to fit an economy 7 meter, they booked an appointment and the man showed up on time. However when I asked him what type of meter he was fitting he said a standard singe wat meter, I told him I had agreed with eon that I would be having an econmy 7 meter, he said he didn't know anything about this, so I told him not to complete the work. I then phoned eon back and explained what happened with the engineer. They booked another appointment and assured me the engineer would have the correct meter. I then went away on business and my wife was there to allow him access to fit the meter. I was away for about 4 months, I returned to find a £450 eletric bill and a meter has been fitted which is not an economy 7, I phoned eon today to explain and they are denying one was requested and that the standard meter is what I have got, before i raise a complaint or go any further I wanted to know if there is anything I can do about the £450 bill I r if anyone else has had any similar experiences with energy providers and what the next step would be. Any advice is appriciated as this is the first time iv had any real problems with an energy company. Thanks for taking the time to read this

  • Its a bit baffling as you say you have night storage heaters in situ. Eco 7 meters are always used for night storage and they re wired up direct to come on only when the cheap rate is active. Are you sure the meter isnt an eco 7 .The new little digital meters look the same as a standard meter except it would have 3 reads on it, sometimes scrolling around, sometimes a button to press. Fitting night storage without an eco 7 meter makes no sense. People who have dispensed with night storage will exchange the meter for a standard one but only when they ve got a better and cheaper heating source
  • Hi Nodrama and welcome to the Forums.

Have to say, I'm as baffled as sacsquacco. Night storage heaters usually work with a multi-rate meter like Economy 7. The heaters charge up during the cheaper off peak hours and then release the heat gradually throughout the day.

Was the previous prepayment meter Economy 7? Your old statements will tell you. When meters are changed, it's usually like for like.

Have you had the chance to have a look at the meter as sacsquacco advises? There's some useful information about meters on our website that might help too. Sorry, I do understand there's much more going on at this time of year.

If I am barking up the wrong tree then you're right to raise a complaint. We'll re-book the appointment and re-assess the charges.

Economy 7 tariffs have higher day prices than single rate products. To benefit from Economy 7, a significant amount of electricity needs to be used during the off peak times. The actual percentage depends on the tariff and region. Storage Heaters usually mean this amount is used and, from what you say, it certainly seems you're within the ballpark.

The notes on the account will help us determine what's happened. If we're at fault, we'll put it right by manually calculating the charges based on the usage at the property. It's not possible to re-bill the account as it will only bill to the meter in place. Any adjustments will also be done manually.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction Nodrama.
