Why is being 1 stop out of zone 6 so difficult?

This is laughable.
We liveoutsidet the LT area. I think the last bus is about 10:30 but would never risk it because they might not feel like turning up.
You have a good regular form of transport. Yes, it is expensive, but is is cheaper than taxis. The only way I can get dependable transport round here is to cycle. Yes, we have a rail station 5 minutes walk away (Gatwick to Reading line) but even that is often canceled out of the blue. What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0 -

I'm sure it's only been done as Radlett is quite a wealthy village. If you look at maps like this (http://cdn.londonist.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/zones.jpg) places like Epping get to be in zone 6 but it squashes up in the north of London.
It's also a lot less rural than places such as Rickmansworth.
Radlett is East of Watford, about 2 Km further north and on a completely different line, so Watford is not "further out".
Borehamwood is in Zone 6 but New Barnet and High Barnet are in Zone 5. On the map, High Barnet is further east but only about 300 metres south of Borehamwood! They have to draw the line somewhere but they do seem inconsistent sometimes.
Things have improved though. Several years ago I had to work in Croydon for a few weeks. I already had a 1-5 Oyster but as Borhamwood was in Zone 6, I had to buy a season ticket to the next station, Mill Hill, which was in Zone 4 - so the Zone 5 part of my Oyster was wasted. That was before they started doing Oyster PAYG at NR stations. Earlier this year, I was working in Chessington and it was cheaper for me to get a paper season ticket from Borehamwood to Chessington than it was to use a 1-6 Oyster. I did have trouble with one revenue enforcement guy though!
Rickmansworth is rural?0 -
This is because the Train Companies like to charge only marginally less for a single, compared to the cost of a Return. They also like to charge very high fares, so that people either choose not to travel by rail (which is the case for most people) or they are ripped off (which is the case for people who don't drive and have no suitable bus alternative)jbuchanangb wrote: »How stupid is all that? For £19 she could have a round trip all the way with National Rail. For £6.40 she does the journey with a bit of a bike ride at each end.
However if they accept Oyster PAYG fares, then they are forced to accept single fares being charged at only half the cost of a return, and the fares are also charged at a rate that is generally fairly reasonable.
There is no way that Greater Anglia will agree for Billericay to be in the Oyster area, because they want to continue for people to pay huge sums to travel to/from Billericay.
They believe that most people will pay whatever price they ask, and will not use "split ticketing" to make the journey cheaper.
So nothing will change.0 -
But the title is "one stop out of Zone 6", so I take that to mean there are no intermediate stations between Zone 6 and your station.First of all Redhill is close enough for the purpose of the discussion. .
If that's not correct, and you simply mean there are non-stop services from the London area to your station, then I am also "one stop out of Zone 6" because most of the trains I catch from King's Cross are non-stop to my station!;):rotfl:
You make some good points, but we cannot help you when you're cryptic about the journeys you are making.0 -
Epsom 1 day travelcard has been increased to match the price of a one day travelcard. So that loophole has been closed.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
