Their was a girl on the course who could NOT drive, I.E she had never even sat in a drivers seat, didn't know the pedals etc etc, she was sold the course as if she would drive away after 5 days which is obviously not the case. To keep the instructors pass rate up they never even let her take a test in the week! They told her when she was ready they would send her the money to take a test at home which was slightly out of order given how the advertised the course to her (although I do agree, nobody with less than a weeks experience/lessons should really be on the road, but it was still naughty to sell her a £500course knowing this would be a likely outcome). This is apparently very common practice, if they don't think your 100% capable they won't even allow you to take the test to keep their pass rates as high as possible. Keep this in mind as I think it's a dirty trick and it happened to about 3 different people in the group while I was ther

This is quite a common occurrence. When Instructors are under pressure...ie paid by pass rate...then they will look to do whatever they can to maintain or improve that pass rate.

It saddens me to see this attitude prevailing in the public domain, involving folk who have parted with hard cash.

It has happened [and still goes on] in the world of contract driver training, especially.

However, it isn't Joe Public who is paying, but the Government [most probably, the Ministry of Defence]...

The outcome is, those students who will not have a hope in hell of achieving the required standard within the specified time, get passed on to the place where-I-work......where they get..in simple terms, as much time as they need, to pass the test. They still have intensive training, however.... ie are at it solidly, pretty much, from breakfast to tea time.

The rub comes when our alienated senior management want to know why our driver instructors take longer to get a student pass, than the equivalent contract driver training instructor?

That is when their hooky procedures come to light...but heck, it's only the MoD that is being ripped off...not the individual private citizen.

    It is being stamped on.

Contracts are cancelled....[or, contractors go bust...as happened with BSM].....but the most usual method is when a contract manager arrives, and compels the contractor to train all students presented, regardless of ability!

    That's when the contractor squeals!

But it has taken a very long time to get to that position.
No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......

On the converse; if they decided she had no chance of passing, why would they let her waste her time on a test? Who does that benefit?

That's not really any different from any other driving instructor, who won't let you book a test until he/she feels that you're able to pass it.

At least this way they gave her the money to book at test at a later date when she stands a chance of passing, and presumably she left the centre a better driver than she started.
