Sandblasting iron fireplace

I don't know how much mess is created when sandblasting an iron fireplace.
Does an iron fireplace need to be removed before it can be sandblasted, or can it be sandblasted when in situ? Or does sandblasting create a lot of mess and therefore best to have the fireplace removed first?
Thanks
