Help with laptop please

I just bought my hubby a new HP Stream Laptop. The sales advisor in PC World advised me to switch it on and make sure it works before wrapping it and putting it under the tree - just in case it's the one in a million that doesn't work, so as not to disappoint on Xmas day. Fair enough I thought...

I've switched it on out of sight of husband. Only problem is it wants to walk me through setting it up and it obviously requires info pertinent to him, including email address and password. So now I can't get past the set-up stage to shut the bloody thing down. Pressing the power key just puts it into standy-by mode. Can I put it back in the box and wrap it and just let the battery run down or will that !!!!!! it up? Will it !!!! the set-up process up and/or the laptop in general. I sodding hate windows laptops, give me a mac any day!

  • If you press the power on button and hold it down for about 5 secs it should shut down.

Even if it wont shut down, you can carry on and fill in the email address surely, then do a password which you can give to your other half and give him the password you have used.

He can change it if he wants to.....

Entering an email address (depending on who it's with) creates an online Microsoft Account, with a OneDrive and all sorts of other stuff.

Whereas you /your husband might want not want to do that and set up a Local Account instead.

The sales advisor in PC World is an idiot for suggesting you turned it on when your husband might want to set it up himself.

I think the odds are a lot less than a million judging by all the troubleshooting problems folk have with new lappies.

If the battery runs down it's quite easy for it to charge up again.

Thank you so much everyone. First time I've needed to use this board and you've been great. I tried the first suggestion and it's worked a treat. Now I can relax! Merry Christmas to All
