Toyota Corolla Gearbox Problem

Hi,

I own a 2004 (04 plate) 2 litre diesel Toyotal Corolla. At 50000 miles it started jumping out of 5th gear. It was repaired under warranty by Totota. 9000 miles later I had the same problem, once again repaired under warranty. 5000 miles later same again and again repaired by Toyota. This time it lasted 7500 miles and eventually Toyota agreed to replace the gearbox. The new gearbox lasted approx 40000 miles (just over a year). Toyota want me to pay £1000 + Fitting + Vat stating that the warranty on the new gearbox is only 1 year.

I am trying to get Toyota to accept that this is a problem with the maufacture or design of the gearbox.

I have been told that this is a problem that is affecting the Avensis model, and since my corolla has the same engine and gearbox it's probably the same fault.

Does anyone have any more information on this problem?

Thanks in anticipation.

I can't see any report of problems on Honest John's Car-by-Car Breakdown. Try emailing Honest John: letters@honestjohn.co.uk he usually replies to all emails received which I hope helps you.

Who said that it's a problem affecting the Avensis? If this came from the dealer and it's clear your car has the same engine/gearbox then there's no question about the dealer's liability here, good luck :D

There are no such known issues with the gearbox. Could it be the way you drive? It sounds like a worn selector issue which can be caused by you driving with your hand resting on the gearstick.

    Conor,

    Thanks for you reply.
As you can see from the mileage of my car I do approx 40000 miles a year which is mostly on Motorways. I don't drive with my hand on the gearstick, especially when on Motroways.
I was told by one of Toyotas mechanics that they are having this problem with the Avensis gearbox, mostly with high mileage cars typically used by company drivers.

why not try asking on the toyota owner's club site?- the forums are quite illuminating and you might get some practical suggestions.
