In that case you want to get her a macbook pro with ssd for a super quick start up. Plus the retina display will be wonderful for her aging eyes, she'll feel like she's 20 again.
The only thing is the £1000 plus price tag, but don't worry about that, its well worth it for checking emails.
I think that going from Windows XP to Mac is easier than to Windows 8.

:D Really? I can't believe you had that much trouble with W8.1. 15 minutes of learning where a couple of things are and you are up to speed...I've not met anyone who has found it difficult, different yes, but not difficult.

I have not met anyone who found it easy - or thought it an improvement.

All the advice on these types of thread seem to be to get it to look like Win XP/Vista/7.

They too have brand names and model numbers. It seems that it is not just her who struggles with these things.
So let's try again with the brand name and model number. ;)

I remember the first time I used a PC, I was 17m i was at college, the screen saver came on and I panicked, thought i'd broken it. I always remember that day whenever im trying to help someone who's struggling with the technology.

I remember being too scared to press the Prt Scrn button in the library, as I thought it would send something to the printer and I'd have to pay the 20p! Bear in mind I was about 8 at the time :o
