Blocking access to websites

Hi can anyone help.

I have windows xp and I am wondering if there is any way I can block certain websites.

For example I want to stop my teenager going onto myspace but I am not sure if I can do this.

I have tried putting the website address into the restricted websites via internet options in the control panel but this doesn't work,.

Is it possible,

Edit the HOSTS file on your PC, you can block any site you want with this.

The HOSTS file is a good one and one method that people, especially tech-minded teens often forget about as it's not the most obvious thing to check (at least from what I've found).

Do you want to block the site permenantly or password protect it? The host files will allow you to block the site (or redirect it) but will get annoying if you (or another person) wants to access the site.

A password block will be easier on other users, of course you'd have to ensure the password wasn't guessable or left lying around for the person who you wanted to restrict access to. I'm sure there are some user-independent blocking programs out there where you can customize profiles for each user and password-protect those.

Depends on the type of block. If you or anyone else (other children/friends) don't use MySpace, the HOSTS will work fine.

I find using 'content' option under IE and BlockSite extension under Firefox does it for us at the moment! NB Remember to password them!!

If you connect through a router you can often block by url or keyword
  • I'm using F-Secure Intenet Security Suite 2006 - it's really good. I'm still on the 60 day trial, I'm not sure how much it costs.

But it stops my Dad from accessing dogging sites...
