replacement lock for uPVC door

Options
Our back door needs a new lock as using the key inside does not lock it it just keeps turning and we can only lock it from outside.

The make seems to be Safeware but I am not sure how I change it - can you buy new locks and change them yourself?

good point, must pay more attention

if it is a euro lock then it is easy to replace yourself and it will take a matter of minutes

look for an anti bump lock or an ABS cylinder lock

have a watch of that video or search youtube for replacing a euro cylinder
  • Euro cylinders are very easy to replace, just open the door and unscrew the often philips style screw that is in line with the key on the edge of the door. You will have to get the key position correct to remove the cylinder but it is not difficult to do.

As has already been mentioned make sure that you buy a decent quality lock that is anti snap and anti bump is also beneficial. Advocet make the best Eurocylinders. You can get them keyed alike if purchasing multiple locks and some additional choices on the locks and colours.

Sounds like half of the tumbling pins have failed. If that is all it is an easy fix. Below will show how.

If it is the locking mechanism then Yale do a replacement that they say will replace 100% of locking mechanisms. But you will need to measure the faceplate, backset and perhaps remove part of the faceplate as well.

As above dead easy and cheap as chips, quality reps are available in every size on Ebay etc.

The point you need to watch is that they are different lengths and offsets.

IE they are all held by a screw in the door edge, that screw point can be offset to the inside or outside or even equal, there are probably 20 combinations in the option list.

It can be carefully measured without removing the barrel, but for piece of mind take out the screw and measure.

And again as above, almost every part for plastic door mechs are available, wheelboxes the lot, it's just a case of identifying what you need.

Just a point, we had to replace 1 this year.
We are both wery fire consious, but don't like leaving keys in locks over night, we went with a Yale turnbuckle to the inside, ie, no key needed on the inside.

May not be suitable if you have young children that need to be prevented from getting outside though.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
