Did the boss suspect that he was pretending to be ill to go home early to go out that evening? If was so poorly he couldn't do another hour but well enough to come in the following day?

    Otherwise, it's incredibly harsh practice.
  • If he has understood this correctly then no, it isn't legal regardless of what his wage is. But as he has correctly surmised, making a fuss will almost certainly mean he doesn't make it to six months. As previously observed, it's a hard world, and sometimes you have to accept the knocks, even if unfair. The alternative is worse.
  • Thank you all.

He definitely won't do anything to jeopardise this job. It has taken him three years to find a job and he does like it there. It was a harsh wake up call to realise that although he was the star pupil at college, that didn't guarantee that he was going to walk into the "dream job" (in media!).

As said above - a tough lesson to learn, but he will just chalk it up to experience.

At least he known, if he isn't feeling 100% when he wakes up, it would be better to call in sick rather than risk having to leave early.

I'd be livid and would definitely speak to the boss about how unfair it seems.

Yes, I doubt this job even hit his top ten, did it? It's awful to see what is happening to the young these days, but he is right - not worth the risk of losing a job over. If he still wants to move on to something better, he can't afford anything on his record that might come back to bite him.

I hope one of the things he might chalk up to experience is joining a union. It is never too soon to find out that "carp" happens, and be prepared.

Most places don't pay sick pay until 6 months service, but should got the pay the hours he worked. Then between 6 months-2 years, the first three days are unpaid.

What does his employer handbook say about this?

I fell ill like the son's OP about three years ago with two hours to go and I did get paid normal pay until the time I clocked out.

  • Tory Britain 2014 I'm afraid.
Because this never happened in Liebers 13 years in charge? It's a nonsensical statement you made.

And it is wrong what the employer did, not acceptable.

So sad if he is not willing to stand up for himself if they really do not pay for his work. Will they then not think he was a good actor on the day and that he realises he has been rumbled?

They'll take him for a fool if they do think he was really ill and fair game to exploit again.

Let's hope it was actually a joke on the employer's part.
  • If I leave early then I get paid for the hours I have worked up until then, So if I was in the same situation then I would get paid for 9:30am-7pm and not from 7pm-8pm (The hour not worked), but the extra hour on Saturday would make up for the hour missed on Friday

I think he may have misunderstood the manager, as the manager said he would not be paid for the whole day (e.g. 9:30-8pm), he should however get paid for the hours he did work (9:30am-7pm), it is just the hour he will lose (but he won't as he did the extra hour on Saturday)

I think that he has just mistook that the manager said that he would not be paid at all for that day, which is surely not correct, it will only be the hour he missed that he will not be paid for on that day
  • I agree with Topaztiger1983. He must have misunderstood what he was told. It seems very unlikely that a lab company would not pay for hours worked. If they don't want to pay him for the hour he missed then OK. But to not pay him for the rest of the day he worked is nearly unheard of.

I sugest he politely seeks clarification.
