Playstation 3 Help Please

Hi there,
I am thinking of getting a PS3 to use for gaming but also to use as more of a media centre.
Can one of you guys confirm if I would be able to store mp3 music files & mp4 films on the hard drive (as I would normally do on my PC) and play them through my TV.
I know that I couldnt save mp3 files to the xbox 360 hard drive without actually burning each cd individually to the hard drive instead of just transferring the files across.
